Google on Friday released new set of community guidelines for its employees that aimed at guiding them about the topics that they can talk about inside the company. The new set of guidelines besides providing a clear directive for the Google employees reminds them that as Google employees it matters what they speak and that they will be held accountable for their statements.
Google in a 611-word long memo outlined five broad rules or guidelines for its employees to follow while they are communicating in the workplace. As a part of the new official policy, Gogle employees are barred from trolling, name calling, or engaging in ad hominem attacks about anyone. “This, as Google explained in the post, includes “making statements that insult, demean, or humiliate (whether individually or by reference to groups) other employees, our extended workforce, our business partners, or others (including public figures), or that violate other standards of conduct or policies against harassment and bullying.”
The employees have also been asked to be mindful of what they speak. “Be sure to speak with good information. Don’t assume you have the full story, and take care not to make false or misleading statements about Google’s products or business that could undermine trust in our products and the work that we do,” the Mountain View, California based company wrote in a statement.
The most shocking guideline in the entire document, however, was the one that discouraged Google employees from having discussions on political topics at the workplace. “While sharing information and ideas with colleagues helps build community, disrupting the workday to have a raging debate over politics or the latest news story does not. Our primary responsibility is to do the work we’ve each been hired to do, not to spend working time on debates about non-work topics,” Google wrote in its Community Guidelines.
“Avoid conversations that are disruptive to the workplace or otherwise violate Google’s workplace policies,” the tech giant added.
